Together, Always

Dandjoo, Kalyagal

This is the story of a family whose lives have been shaped by love, resilience, community and an unwavering commitment to one another… It is a story of journeys across Country and across oceans of joys and hardships and of the strength that comes from remaining connected to family.

At its heart is the central meeting place, representing Mel, her husband Ben, and their two children, Riley and Aoife. This is their home - a place built on kindness, laughter, purpose and unconditional love. The meeting place symbolises more than a physical location -- it represents the place where stories are shared, relationships are nurtured, and generations connected.

Extending from this are the family's wider connections. The meeting place in the top right represents Ben's family across the waters in Dublin, while the meeting place in the bottom left represents Mel's childhood family in Country Victoria. Along Mel’s pathway sit two birthing caves, symbolising the sacred and everlasting bond between a mother and her children. Though separated by great distances, the flowing journey lines remind us that love and belonging are never limited by geography. Throughout their lives, Mel and Ben have travelled in order to remain close to family, proving that shared experiences, learning and maintaining relationships are among life's greatest gifts.

From the central family are two sacred journey lines, each beginning at a U-shape. The top left represents Riley and the bottom right represents Aoife.

The journey leading from Riley winds confidently into the world before gently returning to his family. As a child, Riley was endlessly curious, forever asking questions, seeking knowledge and often choosing his own path when others followed the crowd. His love of books, animals and nature continues today as he studies law in Canberra. Birds accompany his journey, representing freedom, learning. Within his journey line shows the friendships and community that continue to shape his life. Though he now walks his own path, his journey forever circles back to the family who remain his foundation. These family connections remain throughout life, no matter how far the journey may lead.

Aoife's journey flows in another direction, reflecting both the beauty and challenges that have shaped her life. Joyful, brave and fiercely spirited from childhood, she has faced extraordinary hardships. Above her pathway, rain symbolises these difficult seasons of grief, uncertainty and healing. Yet beside the rain stands the rainbow, representing hope, spirituality and the promise that light continues to follow even the darkest storms. Her family walk beside her always, surrounding her with unwavering love and support while the community she has gathered along the way reminds us that healing is often carried by many hearts.

Across the painting are symbols celebrating the things that bring this family joy and keep them grounded in Country. Paw prints honour their beloved dog, while the dingo reflects Aoife's deep affection for these remarkable animals and cherished memories of K'gari.. Kangaroo tracks speak of continual movement and life's ongoing journey, while the river flowing across the painting represents both the waterways Mel holds close to her heart and the passage of time itself. Like a river, life continually moves forward, carrying stories, memories and generations together.

The native plants woven throughout the artwork - including eucalyptus, wattle and the iconic Xanthorrhoea - represent the family's deep appreciation for Australia's natural landscapes. Their home is surrounded by native gardens creating a sanctuary alive with birdsong and wildlife. Birds appear throughout the painting not only as symbols of freedom and guidance, but also in recognition of Ben's love of the peaceful birds that visit their garden each day.

The community gathering near the river represents the incredible network of family, friends and chosen community who have supported this family through every season of life. It acknowledges that while grief and hardship can make the world feel smaller -- genuine connection, compassion and kindness continue to sustain us.

The piece is a celebration of resilience. It honours two parents who have devoted themselves wholeheartedly to raising their children with love, courage and compassion. It speaks of hope carried through difficult times, of family strengthened not broken by adversity and of journeys travelled in different directions but always remaining connected.

Through this we are reminded that no matter where life's paths may lead family, community and love remain the enduring threads that bring us home.
